Austin is the capitol of Texas.  The beautiful capital building is one of the most distinguished in the nation and boasts the largest in gross square footage.  It is based on the architecture of 15th century Italy and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.  Located in the downtown commercial district near the University of Texas at Austin,  it has superb views of the Colorado River.  The magnificent dome can be viewed without obstruction from many vantage points throughout the city.

The Capitol Visitors Center is located in the 1856 restored General Land Office Building on the southeast corner of the capitol grounds (Congress & E 11 Street).  Docents are available to answer questions about the Capitol and the Visitors Center. Free guided group tours of the Capitol Visitors Center are available.
